Ten New York City public schools earned a Blue Ribbon designation this year, an honor given to just 329 schools nationwide.
The award is given to schools for overall academic excellence or their work to close the achievement gaps between student groups. Schools from all five boroughs were honored.
This year’s winners included Queens’ P.S. 242, a school that serves pre-K to third graders; Park Slope’s P.S. 39; and five charter schools, including University Prep Charter High School in the Bronx — a unionized charter school started (as Green Dot New York Charter School) in partnership with the United Federation of Teachers in 2008.
“Our educators and school staff work tirelessly, day in and day out, to put New York City’s children on the path to a bright future, and it’s wonderful to see their efforts celebrated today,” Chancellor Carmen Fariña said in a statement released by Uncommon Schools. “Having visited Excellence Girls, I can speak to the passionate teachers and eager students and I congratulate the entire school community on this exciting achievement.”
“This is an extraordinary honor that proves a school that stresses collaboration to ensure student success pays off,” University Prep Principal Andrea d’Amato said in a statement. (University Prep and Chalkbeat share a board member, Gideon Stein.)
