Chalkbeat NY wins national award for mayoral election coverage

Thanks, EWA!

Judges for the Education Writers Association’s annual contest recognized Chalkbeat New York’s work to bring readers timely and interesting updates on last year’s mayor’s race, awarding us second prize in single-topic news coverage among education-only news organizations.

The award is a tribute to our work as a team: Nearly all of our reporters had bylines in the five stories that made up our “Education Issues in NYC Mayor’s Race” entry.

Here’s what one of the judges said about our entry:

Chalkbeat had the mayor’s race covered. If education mattered to you as a New York voter, you had to go no further than Chalkbeat to find where the candidates stood, what was happening in the race and who was likely to become the next schools chancellor. Thorough reporting combined with political savvy.

And here are the five stories in our award-winning entry:

Chalkbeat CEO Elizabeth Green is on EWA’s board; the contest is judged by an external panel.
