City education reporters depart for rainier pastures

Transition at the city Department of Education brings transition on the education beat, as two reporters who covered schools under the Bloomberg administration are moving on.

Lisa Fleisher of the Wall Street Journal and Rachel Monahan of the New York Daily News are each leaving New York City for rainier climes — 5,000 miles apart from each other.

Fleisher, who began covering city schools full-time in October 2011 after a year following N.J. Gov. Chris Christie, will move to London next month to report on technology for the Journal’s digital team. She confirmed her departure on Twitter today, hours after Capital New York reported about it.

Monahan, who has covered education for the New York Daily News since 2009, is moving to Portland, Ore., with her family next month.

“I have enormous respect for my colleagues on the beat,” Monahan said. “I hope the ones who remain will keep up the good work.” (We’ll do our best!)
