Voices from the 2013 high school search: Giuliana Tubiolo

Giuliana Tubiolo, 12, is interested in the CSI High School for International Studies because she learned at the Staten Island high school fair that students get travel opportunities. “I went to Italy in first grade and I want to go again,” Giuliana said. “I just want to see the different places, like the Eiffel Tower and the landmarks in the different countries.” Tubiolo said she also wants an opportunity to learn Italian.

Tubiolo is also looking at New Dorp High School, Staten Island Technical School, and Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts because she likes hip-hop dance. She will also apply to a few Catholic schools and will need to take the Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools as well as the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test, which is required to get into Staten Island Tech. Giuliana said she takes a course that meets twice a week to prepare for the standardized tests.

Tubiolo is zoned for New Dorp High School, but she still has to apply if she wants to attend certain specialized academies within the school. She said the application process is hard but she thinks its fair. “If you really want a certain school, you have to try hard to get it,” she said.
