Voices from the 2013 high school search: Samantha Torres

Samantha Torres is a 12-year-old currently attending I.S. 230, a magnet school in Jackson Heights. Her top choice for high school is the Academy for Careers in Television and Film in Long Island City.

“I want to be a photographer when I grow up so I want a school with film and photography classes,” she said.

Other important factors for her when looking at high schools are a safe environment and a high graduation rate.

“I have other choices if I don’t get into my top school,” said Torres. One of her options is Veritas Academy, another arts-focused school.

Roxanne Scott is a student at CUNY Graduate School of Education.
