Film: "First Generation"

Please join College Access: Research & Action (CARA) for a screening of the documentary “First Generation,” and conversation following the film. Please note the new location at the High School of Fashion Industries!

Narrated by Golden Globe nominee Blair Underwood, “First Generation” tells the story of four high school students – an inner city athlete, a small town waitress, a Samoan warrior dancer, and the daughter of migrant field workers – who set out to break the cycle of poverty and bring hope to their families and communities by pursuing a college education.

Following the film, our conversation will explore best practices for engaging first-generation-to-college youth, and provide the opportunity to hear directly from young people in NYC facing similar obstacles.

College Access: Research & Action (CARA) works with schools, community-based organizations and young people across New York City to address issues raised in this film. Our goal is to develop strategies and programming that engages first-generation college bound students in the post-secondary planning process, supports them in making informed choices, and successfully transition into their post-secondary plans.
