Meet The New Kids: A Book about a High School for Immigrant Teens That Puts a Human Face on the Immigration Debate
Author Brooke Hauser will read from her book, The New Kids: Big Dreams and Brave Journeys at a High School for Immigrant Teens. Set during one year at the International High School at Prospect Heights, where students come from more than 45 countries and speak more than 28 languages, the book follows the stories of a few unforgettable teenagers, all recent immigrants learning English. Many of the students overcame unimaginable difficulties to reach the United States. Some trekked across deserts and mountains to get here, one arrived after escaping in a suitcase, and others won’t say how they got here. Despite all of their different backgrounds, the students share a common hope: They have come to America in search of a better life. Now, they just have to survive high school—and find a date to the prom.
