Upstate educator nabs N.Y teacher of the year title

Ashli Skura Dreher, a nationally certified special education teacher at Lewiston-Porter High School upstate, is New York’s teacher of the year. State education officials announced the award today in Albany.

Geoff is in Albany for the Board of Regents meeting and reports that the odds were good this year for teacher-of-the-year nominees. Only 17 applications were submitted, including just one from New York City, according to Ann Jasinski, of the State Education Department’s Office of Teachers.

Only six city teachers have won the honor since 1965, we reported last year. The last was in 1998.
