What Michael Mulgrew wants

This is what the UFT president will ask for in his speech at the union’s spring conference on Saturday, per the press advisory we just received:

  • A “truth commission” to scrutinize the Bloomberg administration’s education claims.
  • A thorough review of the Freedom of Information Law requests that the Department of Education has not fulfilled.
  • A reorganization of the department that includes the dissolution of the “Division of Law and Accountability.” Mulgrew will say, “It’s time to drain the swamp. With the millions of dollars that Tweed pours down that black hole, we could instead restore the system to the education-focused model that we all know it should be.”
  • An end to decisions based on a single standardized test, including admission to gifted programs and specialized high schools.
  • And an expansion of the “community schools” model that the union is trying to import from Cincinnati.
