Lighting Fires in the Mind

Educator and journalist Kathleen Cushman will discuss the 2008 Practice Project, a nationwide initiative of her nonprofit What Kids Can Do. Cushman is at the forefront of youth publishing projects and has redefined the link between schooling, collaborative inquiry, and youth development. The Practice Project investigates conceptions of mastery and motivation among high school youth and draws correlations with the formation of expertise among adults. This year, Cushman published Fires in the Mind: What Students Tell Us About Motivation and Mastery, her ninth book published with youth as active collaborators. Cushman gained national acclaim in 2003 with her book Fires in the Bathroom: Advice for Teachers from High School Students.
