City Council hearing: Graduation requirements

The education committee of the City Council is holding an oversight hearing about the state’s new high school graduation requirements.

New York State’s Board of Regents adopted higher graduation standards more than a decade ago that have been phased in over time. Beginning with students who entered the 9th grade in September 2008, the local diploma is no longer an available option. Instead, all students must meet requirements for the Regents diploma (score 65 or higher on 5 required Regents exams) in order to graduate. The Committee will examine the Department of Education’s efforts to help students meet the new higher graduation requirements as well as hear concerns and recommendations from interested stakeholders.
